Abstract
This article examines the sustained popularity of British comedy television in Australia during the 1960s to 1980s, arguing that its success was driven primarily by complex commercial relationships rather than cultural imperialism or imperial sentiment. Australian public and commercial broadcasters, notably the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) and Channel 7, imported British comedies because they were cost-effective and marketed as "high quality" by British producers such as the BBC and Independent Television (ITV). This rhetoric of quality was adopted by Australian stations and audiences, shaping public perceptions of British comedy as superior to domestic and American alternatives. Despite political and economic shifts that encouraged Australian content production, budget constraints and programming quotas limited domestic comedy development, reinforcing reliance on British imports until changes in the 1990s altered the television market. The article highlights the importance of business history in understanding cultural exchange within the British World, emphasizing the role of commercial imperatives alongside cultural factors.
