Abstract

The article focuses on five strategies that enable business leaders and individuals to develop courage and take bold action amid uncertainty. Drawing on research and interviews with leaders such as BlackRock’s Larry Fink, PepsiCo’s Indra Nooyi, and whistleblower Frances Haugen, it identifies these strategies as creating positive narratives, cultivating confidence through preparation, taking incremental steps to understand challenges, building supportive connections, and maintaining calm through self-care and reframing. The author emphasizes that courage is a learnable skill essential for navigating volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, and that boldness often leads to stronger organizational outcomes during crises. These insights aim to help leaders overcome fear and paralysis to make purposeful, courageous decisions in business and society.
