Abstract

This article examines the Heinrich-Heine-Klub, an organization founded in 1941 in Mexico City to promote German cultural life among displaced artists and intellectuals during the 1940s, highlighting its role in fostering community and intellectual exchange across ideological and cultural differences. Central to the analysis is the leadership of Anna Seghers, president of the club and a prominent figure in the Mexican exile community, whose views on cultural identity emphasize social bonds and ongoing collective practice rather than ethnicity or place. The article draws parallels between Seghers's activism and Hannah Arendt's concept of civic friendship, which values political discourse and plurality within a provisional community, contrasting this with the eventual fragmentation and political repression faced by many club members after their return to postwar Europe. Through the 1946 collection *Heines Geist in Mexico*, the article illustrates the club's commitment to cultural solidarity and antifascist resistance, while also reflecting on the challenges of sustaining such solidarity amid shifting political realities.
