Abstract
The article reports on an international interdisciplinary conference held at Philipps-Universität Marburg in June 2024, focused on comparing rabbinic and Roman law within the project “Rabbinic Civil Law in the Context of Ancient Legal History: A Legal Compendium to the Bavot Tractates of the Talmud Yerushalmi.” Scholars from multiple countries examined parallels and differences between legal concepts in the Palestinian Talmud and Roman legal sources, including the Corpus Iuris and Gaius’ Institutes, across areas such as tort, property, contract, family, and inheritance law. Key topics included the influence of Roman law on rabbinic legal discussions, women’s property rights, levirate marriage, animal liability, and property use, highlighting numerous legal intersections that remain underexplored due to disciplinary divides. The conference emphasized the potential for further research to deepen understanding of both rabbinic law in its provincial Roman context and Roman law from a period with limited direct sources.
