Abstract

The article discusses the recently acquired letters and diaries of the Flowers and Steiner families, which provide insights into the wartime experiences of Alabamians during the Civil War and World War I. The diaries of Kate Brooks Flowers reveal her despair at being separated from her husband, John Jefferson Flowers, who volunteered to join the Confederate army. After the war, John focused on his business and raising his children, while Kate died in 1878. The letters from the Steiner family highlight their interactions with soldiers stationed in Montgomery during World War I and their lasting appreciation for the family's kindness. The materials offer a glimpse into the lives of Alabamians affected by war and will be preserved for future generations. [Extracted from the article]
