Abstract
The article focuses on Berlin’s unique role as the preeminent “City of Spies,” particularly during the Cold War from 1945 to 1990. Following World War II, Berlin was divided and occupied by the Allied powers and the Soviet Union, becoming a central battleground for espionage between the capitalist West and communist East. The city’s geopolitical position and the Four Powers Agreement allowed extensive intelligence operations, including recruitment, assassinations, prisoner exchanges, and covert surveillance such as Operation Gold. Although Germany’s reunification in 1993 reduced Berlin’s espionage prominence, it remains a major hub for intelligence activities worldwide. [Extracted from the article]
