Abstract
In Motivos de son (1930), Nicolás Guillén masterfully appropriates the distinctive characteristics of the Cuban musical genre known as son. This article explores the son -inspired aspects present in Guillén's poema-son. Special attention is given to the dialogue between the motivos and the musical heritage of emblematic ensembles such as the Sexteto Habanero—later Septeto—and the Trío Matamoros, pivotal in shaping the canon of the Cuban son. To fulfill the aspirations of this research, we delve into both the anthological themes of the aforementioned ensembles and the musical renditions of the motivos created by avant-garde composers Alejandro García Caturla, Amadeo Roldán, and the brothers Eliseo and Emilio Grenet, compiled in the fiftieth anniversary edition curated by Mirta Aguirre. This interdisciplinary approach allows us to unravel the profound connections between Guillén's poetry and son , while revealing its relation to teatro bufo , the immediate precursor of this musical genre.
