Abstract

The Battle of Marengo occurred on June 14, 1800, in Marengo, Italy. Napoleon, who was not officially allowed to lead an army, devised a plan to bring peace to Austria and regain lost territories in Italy. The battle was characterized by mistakes made by both sides, as the Austrians provided false information to the French and Napoleon did not anticipate a major confrontation. Initially, the French struggled, but the arrival of General Desaix and his 9,000 soldiers shifted the momentum in favor of the French. Napoleon later arrived and witnessed the French establishing a new defensive position. This battle, despite heavy casualties, solidified Napoleon's position as First Consul of France.
