Abstract
The article focuses on the growing danger of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union during the early 1980s and proposes a military solution to this threat. It critiques the prevailing doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) and subsequent policies like the Schlesinger Doctrine and Presidential Directive 59, which increased the risk of nuclear conflict amid a strategic imbalance favoring the Soviet Union. The author advocates for a crash program to develop and deploy anti-missile defensive beam weapons capable of neutralizing thermonuclear missiles, aiming to render such weapons obsolete and enable their eventual elimination. This approach includes parallel U.S.-Soviet cooperation on missile defense and joint action against any third-party nuclear aggression, coupled with broader technological and economic development to address the root causes of war.
