Abstract
The book review discusses "Lacan on Depression and Melancholia," edited by Hook and Vanheule, which offers a unique alternative to biomedical diagnosing. The book draws on Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and case studies to enhance our understanding of depression and melancholia, providing clinical implications for their treatment. Unlike the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which classifies suffering based on surface-level symptoms, a Lacanian perspective diagnoses according to the structure and function of symptoms. The book covers various perspectives and includes opposing viewpoints, making it a valuable resource for health professionals, clinicians, students, researchers, and academics in the social sciences.
