Abstract
The Manitoba government has officially recognized Louis Riel, a Métis leader, as the province's honorary first premier. Riel led Manitoba's first provisional government in 1870, negotiating terms of union with Canada and securing French-language and Métis rights in the Manitoba Act. The legislation, known as the Louis Riel Act, also requires the inclusion of Riel's contributions in the school curriculum. This recognition is a significant milestone for the Métis community and all Manitobans, according to Premier Wab Kinew, who is Anishinaabe and the province's first First Nations premier.
