Abstract
The article focuses on the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the fate of its bird discoveries. It details the expedition's origins following the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the journey led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore and document the newly acquired western territory, and their interactions with Native American tribes, including the critical role of Sacagawea. The expedition collected numerous natural history specimens, including several bird species that later became type specimens for ornithologists. After the expedition, Lewis's journals were lost but later rediscovered and transcribed, preserving important scientific observations. The article also briefly highlights Chuck Hundertmark's leadership role in the Colorado Field Ornithologists, emphasizing the organization's adaptation and growth following the COVID-19 pandemic.
