Abstract

The author reflects on the life and legacy of Kaomi Moe, the aikāne and co-ruler of King Kamehameha III, whose story symbolizes Indigenous resistance to colonial and missionary suppression in nineteenth-century Hawai‘i. Topics include the historical significance of same-sex relationships in Hawaiian culture, the erasure and misrepresentation of Kaomi's role by Western historians, and contemporary efforts to reclaim his legacy as a hero of queer and Indigenous resilience.
