Abstract

This article examines the thematic and philosophical resonance between Antonio Gamoneda’s poetry collection *Castilian Blues* and the writings of French philosopher and activist Simone Weil, focusing on their shared exploration of social oppression and affliction. Gamoneda, a prominent Spanish poet whose early work was censored under Franco’s regime, draws on Weil’s firsthand factory experiences and reflections on fatigue, absence of thought, shame, and submission to articulate a collective human suffering marked by both despair and hope. The essay highlights how *Castilian Blues*, recently translated into English, uses the blues’ musical form and stark imagery to convey intimate and social pain while envisioning solidarity and an egalitarian future. Despite differences in language, culture, and context, the article argues that the interplay of individual and collective affliction in both authors’ works offers a universal humanistic message that remains relevant amid contemporary global crises.
