Abstract

The article focuses on recent developments in the European telecommunications sector, highlighting major corporate activities and infrastructure investments across several countries. Nokia plans a nationwide headcount reduction in 2026 but will keep its Munich site open, despite criticism from the trade union IG Metall, while Deutsche Telekom and AI firms Nvidia and Anthropic are investing in Munich’s AI technology hub. In Hungary, Magyar Telekom and 4iG’s subsidiary 2Connect secured substantial EU-funded grants under the Gigabit Hungary program to expand fiber broadband and wireless networks in underserved districts. Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a new transatlantic cable, Fastnet, connecting Maryland, USA, and County Cork, Ireland, to enhance cloud and AI service delivery by 2028. In Italy, Oracle launched a second cloud region in Turin in partnership with Telecom Italia (TIM), supporting data sovereignty and AI services, while TIM plans significant data center expansions; additionally, CK Hutchison and Iliad are reportedly in talks to merge their Italian telecom operations.
