Abstract
This article focuses on a psychobiographical study of Jacques de Molay (1243–1314), the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, conducted by researchers at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The study applies Ernest Becker’s melancholic existentialist theory, which suggests that heroism serves as a psychological mechanism to buffer the terror of death, to interpret de Molay’s life, particularly his endurance of betrayal, torture, and execution without renouncing his ideals. Using publicly available historical data and psychobiographical methodology, the research concludes that de Molay’s mature confrontation with death exemplifies existential authenticity and symbolic immortality. Further details are available through the article "Heroic Death: A Melancholic Existentialist Psychobiography of Jacques De Molay" in Europe’s Journal of Psychology. [Extracted from the article]
