Abstract

This article focuses on the opera *Médée et Jason* by Joseph-François Salomon (1649–1732), a work that follows earlier operatic treatments of the Medea and Jason myth by Lully and Charpentier. With a libretto by Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, the opera adheres to the traditional five-act French tragédie en musique format while incorporating heightened dramatic and emotional elements favored by Parisian audiences of the time. The recent recording, led by tenor and musical director Reinoud Van Mechelen with his ensemble nocte temporis and the Chambre de Namur choir, features nuanced performances by soloists including Marie-Andrée Bouchard-Lesieur as Medea and Mélissa Petit as Créuse. The production highlights the opera’s vivid characterizations, memorable arias, and imaginative orchestral and choral writing, restoring a once-popular but long-neglected work to contemporary attention.
