Abstract
The article focuses on the 1898 Cape Colony election and its role in escalating tensions that led to the Second Boer War. It details Cecil John Rhodes's controversial political career, including his alliance and subsequent fallout with the Afrikaner nationalist Afrikaner Bond, his imperialist ambitions centered on the rights of English-speaking Uitlander miners in the Boer republics, and his efforts to secure the black vote through manipulation and patronage. The election intensified divisions among English-speaking colonists, Afrikaners, and black voters, with key black political figures and organizations such as John Tengo Jabavu and the South African Native Congress (SANC) playing significant roles. The aftermath saw the rise of factionalism, the outbreak of war in 1899, and long-term consequences for South African politics, including the eventual formation of the African National Congress (ANC).
