Abstract

The article focuses on J. R. R. Tolkien's essay "On Translating Beowulf" and its metrical appendix, which he claims to be a "novel plan" demonstrating rhythms of Old English poetry using examples in Modern English. Topics discussed include Tolkien's claim of precedence despite C. S. Lewis having a similar metrical essay five years earlier, the backstory of Tolkien's essay's development over fifteen years, and the influence of Lewis's 1939 book "Rehabilitations" as a motivating factor.
