Abstract
In many ways we have come a long way since Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), who assisted Charles Babbage as he tried to build a steam-powered, mechanical computer. The Analytical Engine was programmed with punch cards to control a mechanical calculator, but it was Ada's algorithm that calculated a Bernoulli number sequence for analysis tasks. Ada, a mathematician at a time when women rarely received a formal education, realised the potential for Babbage's Analytical Engine, the successor to his mechanical calculating machine, the Difference Engine.
