Abstract

This article focuses on the new Cambridge Edition of Samuel Richardson's final novel, *The History of Sir Charles Grandison* (1753–54), highlighting its significance as a definitive scholarly edition. Despite being favored by Jane Austen, *Grandison* has historically lacked accessibility and critical attention compared to Richardson’s earlier works, *Clarissa* and *Pamela*. The Cambridge edition consolidates the original six volumes into three readable hardbacks and includes a fourth volume of extensive paratextual materials, such as Richardson’s index and a pamphlet addressing unauthorized printings, illuminating his authorial control and engagement with eighteenth-century print culture. The editors’ choice of the octavo version as the copy-text reflects Richardson’s own revisions and artistic intent, challenging previous assumptions of his insecurity. The edition’s comprehensive introduction and notes provide nuanced insights into the novel’s themes, reception, and Richardson’s literary network, aiming to revitalize *Grandison* for both new readers and scholars.
