Abstract
The article focuses on Kevin Puts’s new song cycle, *Emily – No Prisoner Be*, which sets the poetry of Emily Dickinson to music for mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and the string trio Time for Three. Premiered at the 2025 Bregenzer Festspiele, the work features a blend of operatic and Americana-pop elements, with Puts selecting 24 poems to represent Dickinson’s creative world. The cycle explores themes of freedom and empowerment, highlighted by innovative vocal and instrumental interplay, and has been praised for its engaging melodies and emotional depth. Following its European debut, the piece is scheduled for a U.S. tour, including a Carnegie Hall performance.
