Abstract

A new US-led multilateral sanctions monitoring team has been deemed "unlawful and illegitimate" by North Korea's foreign minister, who warned that participating countries will face consequences. The team, which includes the US, South Korea, Japan, and other nations, aims to monitor sanctions enforcement on North Korea in response to a Russian veto that ended monitoring by a United Nations panel. Tensions have escalated on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea recently destroying sections of roads connecting to South Korea, and leader Kim Jong Un making threats against Seoul. The participating nations in the monitoring program include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the UK. [Extracted from the article]
