Abstract
As is known to students of contemporary Japan, Heisei refers to the era name ( I gengo i ) chosen for Emperor Akihito's reign when he was enthroned as the country's monarch in 1989, after his father Hirohito passed away. Mari Miura provides a historical account of how international gender equality indicators have become applied to Heisei politics due to global pressure, inducing increased yet very limited participation by female politicians at the beginning of the Heisei era. This textbook is composed of 25 chapters divided into nine parts that provide a retrospective and multidisciplinary discussion of Japanese society during the Heisei era. [Extracted from the article]
