Abstract
This article focuses on Elizabeth Griscom Ross Ashburn Claypoole, known as Betsy Ross, an eighteenth-century upholsterer and flag maker from Philadelphia who became a historical icon associated with the American Revolution. Raised in a Quaker family, she learned upholstery and sewing, eventually running her own shop and producing military supplies, including flags, during the Revolutionary War. While Betsy Ross is widely credited with creating the first American flag featuring thirteen stars and stripes, there is no contemporary documentary evidence to confirm this claim; the story originated from family testimony decades later. Despite historical debates, her legacy endures as a symbol of the contributions of women artisans to the founding of the United States.
