Abstract

The article focuses on Turkish firm Yapi Merkezi Holdings AS's negotiations with Kenya to electrify the country's Chinese-built railway, aiming to integrate it with an electric railway under construction from Kenya's border to Uganda's capital, Kampala. The electrification, estimated to cost around $1 billion, would reduce operational costs by about one-third and enhance the viability of Kenya's railway investment. Yapi Merkezi also plans to assist with financing and intends to upgrade the line from Mombasa to Naivasha and extend it to the Ugandan border town of Malaba, including signaling and telecommunications systems. Preliminary work on the 300-kilometer Ugandan section is underway, supported by a €75 million government contribution, while fundraising led by Citibank is expected to conclude by year-end.
