Abstract

The article "Bismarck's Britain" from History Today explores Otto von Bismarck's efforts to influence British politics in the late 19th century. Bismarck, the German chancellor, orchestrated a campaign to undermine British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, fearing an Anglo-Russian alliance. Through propaganda, smear campaigns, and foreign policy traps, Bismarck sought to weaken Gladstone's leadership. Ultimately, Gladstone resigned in 1885, marking Bismarck's victory, although his meddling left a lasting negative impression. [Extracted from the article]
