Abstract

This article focuses on the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina and how New Orleans has developed resilience to disasters over the past 20 years. It highlights New Orleans' investments in infrastructure, education, and economic diversification that have improved the city's ability to withstand and recover from disasters, despite ongoing challenges such as poverty, inequality, and environmental health risks. The article contrasts this progress with recent national setbacks in disaster management, emphasizing that disasters disproportionately affect socially and economically vulnerable populations. It argues that resilience involves systemic change and adaptation to reduce disaster risks permanently, offering New Orleans as a case study for other U.S. communities facing increasing climate-related threats.
