Abstract

The article focuses on the historical significance and enduring legacy of the Via Appia, an ancient Roman road begun in 312 BCE that connected Rome to the Adriatic port of Brindisi. It highlights the road’s engineering achievements, cultural impact through literature and art, and its continued use and symbolic importance from antiquity through the Renaissance, the Grand Tour era, and into modern times, including its role in World War II. The Via Appia served military, religious, and infrastructural purposes, inspiring rulers and travelers alike, and remains a physical and cultural link to Rome’s imperial past.
