Abstract

The article focuses on the 1907 scandal caused by the French writer Colette and her lover Mathilde de Morny, known as "Missy," during their performance at the Moulin Rouge. Their show, "Reine d’Égypte," featured Colette as a mummy and Missy as an Egyptologist, culminating in a public onstage kiss that provoked strong reactions from a mixed audience of admirers and detractors. Mathilde de Morny, daughter of the Duke of Morny and a figure known for her masculine appearance and controversial reputation, shared a powerful and defiant presence with Colette, challenging social norms of the time. Despite hostile heckling and disruptions from conservative spectators, the two women’s passionate display underscored themes of lesbian love and artistic freedom in early 20th-century Paris.
