Abstract
The article focuses on the Taiwan Strait crises during the 1950s, highlighting the intense military confrontations between the Republic of China (ROC) and the People's Republic of China (PRC) amid Cold War tensions. Following the Kuomintang's retreat to Taiwan and nearby islands in 1949, the PRC sought to reclaim these territories, leading to significant military engagements, particularly the First Taiwan Strait Crisis (1954-55) and the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis (1958). The United States played a crucial role in supporting the ROC through military aid and intervention, including the deployment of the 7th Fleet and advanced weaponry, to deter PRC aggression. The article concludes that these crises were pivotal in shaping the military dynamics in the region, ultimately leading to a shift in U.S.-China relations by the late 1970s.
