Abstract
Armada: The Spanish Enterprise and England's Deliverance in 1588, by Colin Martin and Geoffrey Parker (Yale University Press, 768 pp., $40) AN audacious and high-stakes military operation that didn't come off, the attempt by the Spanish Armada to take England was one of the most important events of the early modern period. Philip had been married to Elizabeth's half sister, Mary Tudor ("Bloody Mary"), who reimposed Catholicism on England. That said, you will also come away much better informed about a defining struggle in the history of the West, pitting Catholic Spain against Protestant England, Philip II against Elizabeth I, a great empire against a rising power.
