Abstract
The article examines the theme of female alienation in the works of Luigi Pirandello, focusing on how women characters experience estrangement from society, family, and themselves. It highlights the social and existential marginalization of women, often depicted as victims of male-dominated structures that deny them agency and subjectivity. While male characters in Pirandello’s works grapple with existential alienation, female characters frequently face a more total alienation rooted in social exclusion, shame, and control, yet some ultimately transform this alienation into a form of agency through theater. The analysis also situates these portrayals within broader social contexts, emphasizing the cultural and symbolic dimensions of female alienation in early 20th-century Italy.
