Abstract
Medha Patkar, a leader of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), has initiated a "jal satyagraha" in Madhya Pradesh's Barwani district, alleging that the backwaters from the Sardar Sarovar Dam have entered villages due to an illegal increase in the water level. Patkar claims that thousands of houses have been destroyed and farmlands submerged without proper land acquisition and rehabilitation. She argues that the responsibility lies with the Narmada Control Authority and Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited, and the protest will continue until the issue is resolved. Patkar also highlights similar damage caused by rising water levels in the Sardar Sarovar area during last year's monsoons. [Extracted from the article]
