Abstract

A new report from the University of Perugia explores the connection between George Herbert Mead's social theory of the Self and Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology. The researchers propose that Mead's concept of the Self can be understood as both instinctive and unconscious, drawing on Jung's ideas of the collective unconscious and archetype. They argue for a functionalist approach to interpreting the instinctive dimension of archetypes, suggesting a convergence between Mead and Jung in their understanding of the social nature of instincts. This research offers a unique perspective on the social conception of the unconscious. [Extracted from the article]
