Abstract

This article presents the 2025 George C. Marshall Lecture in Military History on the subject of the end of World War II by Richard Overy. Overy’s lecture focuses on comparing the end of the war in Europe and the Pacific with an emphasis on why the German and Japanese leaders put off surrender. The article compares the similarities and differences in these two regions with topics including the impact of social pressure, military culture and the bombing of Hiroshima in surrender.
