Abstract

The article focuses on tenor Issachah Savage’s interpretation of the complex character Peter Grimes in Benjamin Britten’s opera, performed at Dutch National Opera. Savage explores Grimes as a multifaceted outcast shaped by societal rejection and personal trauma, emphasizing empathy for his pain rather than viewing him solely as a villain. Drawing on the libretto by Montagu Slater, based on George Crabbe’s poem *The Borough*, the portrayal highlights themes of social conformity, hypocrisy, and cycles of abuse within a small community. Savage’s approach seeks to humanize Grimes by examining his relationships and the broader social context, connecting the opera’s themes to contemporary issues of judgment and compassion.
