Abstract

Westerkamp invites readers to see Anne Hutchinson in the context of her broader world, skillfully using Hutchinson's life to anchor the book's more expansive discussion of her times. "Historians have long depicted Anne Hutchinson as a unique figure, impressive in her daring and power", Westerkamp writes, but she "was one of many impressive women who came forward (p. 151). Westerkamp certainly does not ignore Hutchinson's powerful presence, "her intellectual abilities and verbal jousting skills... her charisma, as both a magnetic leader and as a guide understood to be filled with I charis i , the extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit" (p. 2).
