Abstract

The article argues that Watergate created a lasting myth of Richard Nixon, a former U.S. President, as an "imperial president," obscuring how intelligence agencies, political elites, and mass media collectively weakened presidential authority and reshaped the U.S. governance. Topics include the role of the intelligence service and military in undermining Nixon, the construction of the imperial presidency narrative, and the decisive power of television and elite media in the scandal's outcome.
