Abstract
The article presents an essay by the president of the American Historical Association in which he details 'conversations' with dead historical figures from fifteenth to seventeenth Italy such as Arcangela Tarabotti and Ferrante Pallavicino and Friuli peasants. The answers to the historian's questions are based research and clues found in the historical record.
