Abstract

The strength of Malice's work lies in her extensive archival research which has resulted in a most detailed history of town twinning between Italy and the GDR at a micro level. I Transnational Imaginations of Socialism i by Teresa Malice is a meticulously researched study that sheds light on the politicization of daily life and the connections between the GDR and Italy through the countries' town twinnings during the 1960s and 1970s. By utilizing a history-from-below approach emphasizing the experiences and interactions of "ordinary people", Malice goes beyond the purely political-diplomatic analysis of GDR-Italy relations that has tended to dominate historiography.
