Abstract
The article discusses the establishment of the East St. Louis National Catholic Community House in 1919 as part of the National Catholic War Council's efforts to involve Catholic women in Americanization programs. The house aimed to address the issues of immigration and racial tensions in East St. Louis, Illinois. However, the Catholic laywomen who staffed the house focused primarily on assisting Polish, Lithuanian, and Bohemian immigrants, rather than addressing the city's racial and economic problems. The article explores the contradictions and challenges faced by the NCWC secretaries in their efforts to establish a place for Catholics in a national endeavor while reinforcing existing class, ethnic, and racial divides.
