Abstract

Gradually, the vaccine pushed smallpox out of Europe and the U.S. Even so, in the 1950s - some 150 years after Jenner's discovery - 1.7 billion people, or roughly 60 percent of the world's population, still lived in countries where the virus was endemic. Just as it did in the '60s with smallpox, the U.S. could decide that a major disease in developing countries, such as malaria, deserves a concerted global coalition. The U.S. could announce a Warp Speed for heart disease tomorrow, on the theory that the leading cause of death in America is a national crisis. [Extracted from the article]
