It's no accident that the dissentingjustices in Dobbs quoted from the finaldissent of Thurgood Marshall in Payne v.Tennessee, in which Marshall lamentedthe Court's decision to step away from anabandoned stare decisis in a case involvingcriminal law. Justice Thurgood Marshall was oneof one, and his leadership at LDF [LegalDefense Fund] really inspired me to understandthe kind of courage I needed tobring to lead the organization to expand itbeyond what had been its limits.
