Abstract
This article focuses on the historical Roman emperors Geta and Caracalla, brothers who ruled jointly from 209 to 211 CE and are depicted in the film Gladiator II. Their brief reign involved travel from York to Rome following their father Septimius Severus's death, with some sources suggesting plans to divide the empire, though this did not occur. Caracalla ultimately murdered Geta in 211, an event surrounded by uncertain motives and unreliable historical accounts. Caracalla continued to rule until his assassination in 217 while campaigning in the eastern Roman Empire. The film incorporates some fictional elements, such as Caracalla appointing a pet monkey as "first counsel," referencing other Roman imperial eccentricities.
