Abstract

The article focuses on the role of Detachment ‘A,’ a secret U.S. Army Special Forces unit based in West Berlin, in the Iran Hostage Crisis and the failed Operation Eagle Claw rescue mission in 1980. Detachment ‘A,’ originally established for Cold War sabotage, had developed counterterrorism capabilities and conducted advanced reconnaissance and rescue planning for hostages held at the U.S. Embassy and Iranian Foreign Ministry. Despite the mission’s failure due to mechanical issues and a fatal accident, Detachment ‘A’ operatives executed a covert escape from Tehran, highlighting their specialized skills. The crisis underscored the need for a unified special operations command, leading to the creation of the U.S. Special Operations Command in 1987. [Extracted from the article]
