Abstract

The article focuses on the séance room as a creative studio space for Spiritualist art, particularly during the Victorian era and continuing into modern times. It examines how pioneer spirit art mediums—such as Georgiana Houghton, Anna Mary Howitt, and David Duguid—produced drawings and paintings believed to be created through communication with spirits during séances, often held in darkened rooms with specific materials arranged for artistic manifestation. The study highlights the séance’s role within Spiritualism’s belief system in life after death and mediumship, describing varied artistic processes including trance states and automatic drawing, while also addressing challenges related to evidential credibility and reception by the traditional art world. Contemporary spirit artists continue this practice, demonstrating the séance’s ongoing function as a unique artistic and spiritual environment where mediums facilitate spirit-inspired artworks.
