Abstract
Since the Meiji Restoration, Japan has embraced numerous foreign cultures, primarily those from Europe and the United States, as part of its modernisation. These cultures have been assimilated into Japanese society and have developed uniquely in this context. One such example is the Danish folkehøjskole (‘folk high school’, or FHS hereafter), an educational institution that originated in Denmark in 1844. Originally a uniquely Danish institution, the school was subsequently disseminated globally. This paper examines the reception and development of folkehøjskole in Japan, with a particular focus on Tokai University, which has its origin in the Danish FHS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
