Abstract

The article discusses how identity and subjectivity inform participation and withdrawal from the public space by analyzing the lead character's investigation of the concept of life in the dark core of subjectivity in the 1927 novel "To the Lighthouse" by Virginia Woolf. Other topics include the relationship between the political and the public, the formation of identity and the link between gender and womanhood.
