Abstract
The article examines the poetics of Adah Isaacs Menken and her only poetry volume, "Infelicia and Other Writings" by pairing it with poet who served it as its inspiration, Walt Whitman and his "Leaves of Grass." Topics include Menken's embrace of free verse and creation of "Infelicia," an analysis of why Menken was interested in unhappiness, and Menken's concern with the right photographic image to match her poetry.
